While many businesses ,and perhaps especially family businesses, can claim an interesting history, there can be few which can boost as rich and varied a past as Bryson's Bar in Magherafelt. Established in 1864 as the Fountain Hotel, the business has been in the current family since 1939 when it was bought by Patrick J Bryson , father of current owner Peter, three weeks after the outbreak of World War Two.
Peter took control in 1982 and set about establishing the basis for the very successful business we know in to be today . A new extension was added serving as a foundation for both the music and the hearty , traditional food. Peter's wife Patricia quickly built a reputation for great quality food that continues to this day.
The premises also has established itself as a top entertainment venue with both local and international live acts playing weekly. This reputation for food and music has brought the bar many awards and attracts patrons from as far away as Bangor, Ballymena, Coleraine and Derry as well as a regular local custom.
A third generation of the Bryson family namely Peter and Patricia's eldest son Niall is now very much to the fore and the traditional Bryson's lunch is now available 7 days a week with the addition of a more contemporary evening menu the already high reputation for food will continue to grow. On top of that the vibrant live music scene which continues to frequent the bar with the top local and international DJ's making Bryson's a new music "must play" venue and the legacy is in very good hands.
