The Tudor House Museum

Tourist Information: After a restoration and upgrade costing more than £5 million and taking 9 years to complete, Southampton’s Tudor House has now reopened to the public. The house dates back to the 1400s, and will celebrate its centenary as a museum in 2012. It now features state of the art audio visual displays to illustrate and explain its long and interesting history and the people who have inhabited the house through the ages. There is also plenty to keep children busy, with a specially designed trail through the house and a mini-beasts tour of the garden. You can also relax in the café overlooking the pretty gardens. The museum is open Monday to Sunday from 10am to 5pm. Admission charges apply.

Winchester Cathedral

Tourist information: This magnificent cathedral has a history of over one thousand years of faith and worship. Renowned for its spectacular architecture, the many treasures to be found here include Jane Austen's grave, the great 12th century Winchester Bible and Antony Gormley's sculpture 'Sound II'. Guided tours are available Monday - Saturday and free children's trail. There is a Cathedral shop and cafe. Admission charges apply. Southampton Maritime Museum

Tourist Information for The Maritime Museum:  The Old Wool House on Town Quay houses the museum which tells the story of this international cruise and cargo port. Includes the Titanic exhibition and story of the world's largest liner, which sank on its maiden voyage in 1912 after striking an iceberg. Discover the story of the devasting consequences for the crews and their families. Admission charges apply. Summer opening times: Monday to Friday 10am - 6pm and Saturdays and Sundays 11am - 6pm. Winter opening times: Monday - Friday 10am - 4pm and Saturdays and Sundays 11am - 4pm.

Eastleigh Museum

Tourist information: Situated in the old Salvation Army Citadel, dating back to 1891, this interesting museum takes you back to the 1930's, with a recreation of part of a local engine driver's home. In addition, there is a display showing a recreation of the Southern Locomotive Erecting Workshop and a steam engine footplate. Various temporary exhibitions, a cafe and a museum shop are also to be found here. Admission is free. Opening times: Tuesday to Friday 10am to 5pm. Saturday 10am to 4pm.

The Beaulieu Estate

Tourist information: A fantastic day out for all the family, with several interesting and fun attractions, including - The National Motor Museum: founded by the present Lord Montague of Beaulieu, which houses over 250 automobiles and motorcycles from all over the world. These tell the story of motoring from the earliest days up to the present and include the famous record breaking 'Bluebird'. Exhibitions also include 'World of TopGear', 'James Bond' and new for 2010, 'ProMotion', which showcases vehicles used by companies to promote their products over the years. - Beaulieu Abbey: although much of this abbey was destroyed on the orders of Henry VIII, you can watch a film presentation which tells the story from its founding in 1204 to the Dissolution. There is also a 'Monastic Life' exhibition and impressive wall hangings which depict scenes from the Abbey's history. - Palace House and Gardens: home to the Montagu family since 1538. You can explore the house and listen to tales from the butler, cook and housemaids in Victorian times. The 'Secret Army Exhibition' tells of Beaulieu in wartime. The extensive gardens are also worth a visit, they include the Victorian Flower Garden, the Wilderness Garden and the Ornamental Kitchen Garden. The Beaulieu Estate is open every day of the year except Christmas Day. Admission charges apply. Opening times: Summer 10am - 6pm. Winter 10am - 5pm

Exbury Gardens & Steam Railway

Tourist Information: For peace and tranquility all year round, visit Exbury Gardens in the heart of the New Forest. This spectacular 200 acre woodland garden is home to the world-famous Rothschild Collection of rhododendrons, azaleas and camellias. For a riot of colour in spring and summer and a blaze of autumn shades, there is always a delight at every turn. Explore on foot, chauffeur driven buggy or take a 20 minute journey on the steam railway. There is a plant centre, gift shop and tea rooms, which can be visited without entering the gardens. Admission charges apply to the gardens. Free parking. Opening times for 2011:  every day from 10am until 5pm - 19th March to 6th November.

QE2 Mile

This interesting and easy walk takes you from The Cenotaph, in the city centre, to the Town Quay. On the way you will pass through the city's parks, new cultural quarter, Bargate, High Street and old town, finishing at the historical waterfront. The QE2 mile is marked by eleven pairs of plaques, which have been laid along the way to represent key events in the city's history. The huge QE2 anchor has been donated by Cunard and will be situated somewhere along the mile later this year, it's so big that you won't miss it! A map is available from the local Tourist Information Office.
