Ashton-under-Lyne is not only famed for its market ground and modern retail developments, but also for its compact, flat and accessible town centre. The town is a vibrant mix of retail and leisure and has one of the best outdoor markets in the country with over 180 stalls filled six days a week, complimented well by many major high street names and a thriving indoor market in the Victorian Market Hall.

The old town area developed during Victorian times and features a wide variety of specialist shops and independent stores, which with the help of Conservation and Commercial Improvement Area grants has been able to upkeep the traditional Victorian style shop fronts.

The Museum of the Manchester regiment is a collection that covers the history of the regiment. Its history is illustrated in the context of the local community from which it stemmed and the social history section covers topics such as Women in Wartime, War Poets, The Spanish Civil War, the Home Guard and National Service. There are displays of uniforms, weapons, medals, badges and regimental memorabilia related to its major campaigns in the American War of Independence, the Crimea, South Africa, both World wars, Palestine and Malaya.
