Welcome

”Samaritans’ vision is that fewer people die by suicide”

Samaritans offer confidential listening 24 hours a day for 7 days a week over 365 days a year.

Our volunteers provide emotional support to people in distress on the phone, face to face, by email and by letter.

If you are interested in Volunteering for the Wakefield Samaritans, please come along to one of our information sessions

• We are here to support anyone who is in distress or despair or who may have feelings that could lead to suicide.

• We give time for people to explore their feelings in the belief that this can help alleviate distress, and to help individuals understand and consider the options open to them.

• We do not judge people in the belief that everyone should feel free to talk without fear, prejudice or rejection.

• We do not give advice or tell people what to do, but wherever possible we do support people in seeking solutions.

Common reasons to call Samaritans are:
• Relationship and family problems
• Loss, including loss of a job, a friend or a family member through bereavement
• Financial worries
• Job-related stress or overwork
• College or study related stress
• Body image issues

”listening to someone who is perhaps depressed, worried, frightened and / or suicidal and who doesn't know where to turn to, is perhaps the most valuable thing we can do for a fellow human being.”
