Home of the Super League rugby team Wakefield Wildcats, the community feel in this ever-growing Yorkshire city can be felt in the air. Not to mention the competition of League rivals Castleford Tigers this really is a local derby that shouldn’t be missed.
At the heart of the city stands Wakefield Cathedral, first built in Norman times then rebuilt in 1329 it’s a beautiful tribute to the history of the area and at 247ft is the tallest spire in Yorkshire and the fourth tallest in Britain. Local to Wakefield can be found the historic market town of Pontefract, famous for its peaty soils and liquorice trade and of course Pontefract Castle which was the final resting place of Richard II and Catherine Howard.
Popular days out around Wakefield are had at The National Coal Mining Museum in Overton, providing the opportunity to experience life 140 meters below the surface in one of the UK’s largest working mines. Hemsworth Water Park and Play World is always a popular choice for children and adults alike to get a taste of water activities or taking a walk in the great outdoors at Newmillerdam Country Park is also an all year round favourite.
If it’s a touch of culture you’re after why not have a wonder around the Yorkshire Sculpture Park where works by the world famous Castleford born sculptor Henry Moore are on display with a beautiful Bretton backdrop.
