Rochdale

More about Rochdale

Visit the borough of Rochdale and you will find a wealth of fascinating heritage and beautiful countryside. Situated at the foot of the Pennines, Rochdale takes its name from its position on the River Roche. Rochdale is one of the few of today’s industrial towns that can trace its history back to the Domesday Book of 1086 and its location as a crossroads to trade between east and west saw the building of the Rochdale Canal and George Stephenson’s Summit Rail Tunnel, giving life to the textile industries of wool, silk and cotton.

The magnificent Victorian Gothic Town Hall dominates Rochdale’s spacious town centre. Built in 1871 the Town Hall is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful Victorian town halls in Britain. Boasting a 240-foot clock tower and spire that was destroyed by fire in 1883 and rebuilt in 1887 the town hall offers guided tours and is open to the public and attracts visitors from all over the world.

The town centre itself houses a great many shops, a daily indoor and outdoor market and two shopping centres that are home to many well-known high street stores.

In the evening the town lights up offering many bars, restaurants, nightclubs and live entertainment and shows at the Gracie Fields Theatre.

Ideally located just off the M62, Rochdale is a great place to live and visit.
