More about Oldham

Birthplace of the worlds first test tube baby Louise Brown in 1978, Oldham can be traced back to the 11th century and has long since been used as one of the major routes from Lancashire to Yorkshire. Although Oldham has lost much of its once famed cotton trade, it is still a major centre of retail in the Greater Manchester area. Discover numerous independent shops and traders in the spacious, modern, indoor Tommyfield market hall, or alternatively wander through the 40 plus high street names underneath one of Europe’s largest stain glass roofs of The Spindles Shopping Centre.

The picturesque pennine villages know as Saddleworth host a mix of rugged and raw beauty. The collection of Galleries in Uppermill to the Roman fort high on the hill above Delph the seven villages that make up the area really do prove that there is more to Saddleworth than just moors.

In June why not come along and enjoy The Oldham Carnival? A weekend long host of family fun and entertainment showcasing Oldham's talent in music, song, dance and theatre displays on the big stage. All around Alexandra Park, you can enjoy attractions such as a Bollywood Fashion show, Carnival Soccer Cup and a favourite from days gone by… it’s a knock out! This really is a visual display of the diversity of community and culture Oldham has on offer.
