Macclesfield

More about Macclesfield

Most of the working mills in the town closed in the 1930’s, however the award winning Silk Heritage Museum based in the town still allows visitors to find out more about the history of the town and the silk industry. Today’s architecture in the town still reminds us of the links to this silk heritage, with many houses in the town being three storey, silk weavers’ houses, where the weaving was done on the top floor. This had special larger windows for more light and provided more room to weave.

The famous 18th century engineer James Brindley, lived in Sutton, near Macclesfield whilst serving his apprenticeship; he was responsible for construction of many British water canal systems, which are still a popular attraction today. Other much more recent famous Macclesfield residents include the late Ian Curtis of the band Joy Division and England Footballer Peter Crouch.

Surrounding the town is a large number of individual rural communities: Adlington, Bollington (also known as happy valley), Bosley, Chelford, Gawsworth, Kettleshulme, Lower Withington, Macclesfield Forest, Marton, Langley, Pott Shrigley, Prestbury, Rainow, Rushton Spencer, Siddington, Sutton, Wildboarclough and Wincle.

Today the town and these surrounding areas has a population of approx 70,000 people, because of the large number of rural communities, one of the main industries is farming, along with tourism, pharmaceutical and banking. The town is also well supported by its own small business community and is home to the Macclesfield Borough Chamber of Commerce.
