Leeds is a prosperous, commercial, industrial and manufacturing city, and the cultural and sporting centre for much of the North. Elland Road is the home of Leeds United Football Club and both Yorkshire County Cricket Club and Leeds Rugby League Club regularly host Test matches. There are many fine golf courses in the Leeds area and an international swimming pool only ten minutes walk from the University. The city boasts hundreds of pubs and bars, some of the best nightclubs and musical venues in the country, a thriving local music scene, covering everything from soul and reggae to jazz and folk, and a renowned club and cafe culture.
Leading groups come regularly to the University and to various venues in the City and surrounding areas Leeds also hosts a full programme of symphony concerts and chamber music, for those who prefer their music classical. In addition the world famous Leeds International Piano Competition is held here every three years. Host to The Grand Theatre the home of Opera North, The West Yorkshire Playhouse and the Leeds City Art Gallery, which houses the Henry Moore Centre for the Study of Sculpture.
Pay a visit to the Royal Armouries to see the nation's collection of historic arms and armour, and enjoy a jousting tournament or a Bird of Prey display. For shopping, there is a grand variety of places to spend your hard-earned money, grant or student loan, with thousands of shops (including the famous Harvey Nichols) and a large variety of shopping centres, in and around town. In addition, many cafes, restaurants, takeaways etc are to be found in and around the city, offering many different tastes to satisfy everyone’s palate.
