Welcome to Colchester, Britains oldest town…
56 miles north east of London the settlement in an Essex borough of the same name, Colchester dates back as far as the 1st century AD and as the oldest recorded Roman town makes claim to being the oldest town in Britain.
Medieval Colchester's main landmark is Colchester Castle which is an 11th Century keep built atop the vaults of an old Roman temple. Also noted for its Victorian architecture, spectacular landmarks include the Colchester Town Hall and the Jumbo Water Tower which has stood magnificantly 116ft above ground level since 1883.
The multi-function arts venue, Colchester Arts Centre is located in the former St Mary-at-the-Walls church, home of the Colchester Beer Festival and one of the largest live music and performing arts centres in the area. A fantasic place to enjoy Jazz, Folk and Dance whatever your taste for adults and children of all ages.
If something a little more energetic is your scene then the town’s many clubs and bars can cater for you. This vibrant mix is all within easy walking distance around the town but if you are willing to travel a little further you can relax in style at a waterside pub, trendy village bistro or even picnic beneath the stars.
