More about Chesterfield

Chesterfield is perhaps best known for the "Crooked Spire" of its Church of Saint Mary and All Saints and is why the local football team is known as The Spireites. The local legend being that the Devil accidentally had a nail driven into his foot by a Bolsover blacksmith flew over the church, and struck the spire whilst lashing out in pain.

The market in Chesterfield dates back to 1165 and today boasts over 200 stalls. In the middle of the market is the Victorian market hall, which is open throughout the week providing shopping facilities and function rooms. Nearby is a part of the town known as The Shambles, which originally dates back to the 12th century. The Shamble’s narrow streets are both quaint and home to good shops, tearooms and an interesting timber framed pub called The Royal Oak.

Stunning Queens Park is only a few minutes stroll away, with its boating lake; miniature railway and children’s play area. It has an impressive array of sporting facilities and has even hosted top class basketball matches. The jewel in the crown is its cricket ground, widely acclaimed by sports writers everywhere as one of the prettiest grounds anywhere in the world, although the ground no longer hosts county cricket it is still well worth a visit.
