Carlisle

More about Carlisle

Our great border city has endured many rebels, forces & tribes throughout its history each leaving a legacy for today’s tourists & residents. The historical castle founded in 1092 by William the Conqueror's son stands as testament to the years of feuding over the English-Scottish border. Carlisle Cathedral’s famous stained glass window is a must see as is the Citadel built by Henry VIII. Tullie House Museum & Art Gallery give an insight into how our historical city developed.

Our busy city offers an array of activities and places of interest including The Lanes Shopping Centre with over 75 stores all under one roof, Bitts Park with its newly refurbished children’s playground after the 2005 floods including water sprinklers for those hot sunny days & pirate ship with sandpit to go exploring! Go and feed the ducks at Hammonds Pond and have a ride on the mini railway. There are three heated swimming pools at The Pools, along with Turkish baths & a gym. For nights out Carlisle’s ever developing night life is a must! With many pubs, clubs, restaurants & hotels you’ll find there’s something to suit all.

If you prefer peace and tranquillity visit Talkin Tarn (just outside Carlisle) with its picturesque views, boating lake, wildlife and coffee shop. Or follow the trail of Hadrian’s Wall and visit Birdoswalds Roman Fort.
