Newby Hall and Gardens

Simply a great day out

25 acres of stunning gardens, a sculpture park, an exciting children’s adventure garden and miniature railway are just a few of the delights that await you at Newby Hall and Gardens.
Newby Hall, a graceful country house and the family home of Mr and Mrs Richard Compton was designed under the guidance of Sir Christopher Wren and epitomises the Georgian ‘Age of Elegance’.

It is renowned for its exquisite 18th century Robert Adam’s interiors, with rooms specially designed to show off the collections of Chippendale furniture, French Gobelin Tapestries and the largest private collection of Greek and Roman statues.

As well as the House visitors can enjoy award-winning gardens featuring one of Europe’s longest double herbaceous borders. Newby also holds many specialist plant collections including a national collection of Cornus (Dogwoods) and has a series of small compartmentalised gardens which are designed to provide colour and interest throughout the year. Children can play safely in the thoughtfully designed Children’s Adventure Garden – from the water play area, sand pit and swings for toddlers, to the exciting pirates’ fort, aerial ropeway and pedalo boats for older children.

The old paddling pool has been recently replaced with a new water play area with dancing jets of water to run through all designed by the famous sculptor William Pye.
Newby also has its own miniature railway with a replica steam engine of the Royal Scot which travels along a picturesque riverside route, enjoyed by children and adults alike. From June – September the historic woodland at Newby houses an exhibition of contemporary sculpture. Around 60 pieces of sculpture by nationally well known and up and coming artists are on show in exciting mixed mediums of bronze, wood, glass, stone, resins and steel. With a quality restaurant, gift shop, plant centre and a delightful picnic area,

Newby Hall has all you need for a perfect day out.
