    • Last but most definitely not least we are very pleased to introduce to you the founders of the company. The late Robert and Isobel MacDonald. Parents of Todd and Fiona, Grandparents to Moira, and Great-Grandparents of Ewan. At the young age of 14 Isobel began her training as a kiltmaker with RG Lawrie, at that time a very prestigious company. Robert came into the profession later (under Isobel’s watchful eye and excellent teaching) after medical retirement. He spent time in Burma and Changi prison with the Durham Light Infantry where he contracted both TB and malaria. He worked in several other jobs including on the railways, with the co-op, council, and as a bouncer at the ‘dancing’ in Airdrie where he met Isobel. Robert and Isobel were married in 1953 and had 5 children (several of whom learned the art of kilt-making through their childhood). They moved to West Lothian in 1973 where their love for each other and dancing continued and soon after R&I MacDonald was founded. The quality of products from R&I MacDonald became well known and as well as providing outfits for many pipe bands around the world Robert and Isobel even made kilts for Prince William, Prince Harry, and James ‘Scotty’ Doohan. It is this quality and attention to detail, so important to Robert and Isobel, that has continued to remain the standard that we work to and are so proud of. We hope you have enjoyed learning a little more about us. Keep watching for a special competition soon. Facebook.com9th Dec, 2017

    • Tonight’s meet the team post is all about the boss. Pleased to introduce Todd. Todd is the son of Robert and Isobel, brother to Fiona, Uncle to Moira, and Great-Uncle to Ewan. Todd has been with R&I MacDonald for almost 30 years. As well as having an incredible knowledge of tartan and kilts he is also a very talented golfer and a proud dad and grandad. • Small break from our meet the team series to show off our new gift vouchers. Available now, in store or by phone (01506 872678). Perfect Christmas gift or stocking filler. Lots of other gift ideas available in store. Hope to see you soon. Facebook.com3rd Dec, 2017

    • Next up in our meet the team series is Annette. Annette is originally from Inverness and learned to make kilts after leaving school. She moved to West Lothian in 2002 and became part of the team in 2006. Annette is a mum of 2 and also a Granny to 1. She has recently discovered the joys of travelling, jetting off to exotic places like Thailand and Nepal. Facebook.com29th Nov, 2017

    • Next up is Moira. Moira is the daughter of Fiona, step daughter of Malcolm, aunt to Ewan and grand daughter of Robert and Isobel (starting to get complicated now). Moira grew up spending a lot of time as a volunteer at Almond Valley Heritage Centre where she went on to work as both the train and tractor driver. She attended Oatridge Agricultural College and Scottish Agricultural college where she earned a degree in landscape design and construction (B.Sc. Landscaping). Moira then went into teaching and lecturing brickwork and construction, first at Midlothian Council then Edinburgh College. Moira is married to Alistair and they live in the house they built themselves. They are proud parent to 3 young children (future team members?) and 2 terriers. By the time baby number 3 arrived in 2014 Moira decided she wanted a change of direction and came home to the family business. She is now happily perfecting her kilt making skill, (keeping Todd in line), looking after the customers, hires and many other tasks whilst also acting as current chair of Auchengray primary parent council in her spare time. • Next up in our meet the team series is our youngest member, Ewan. Ewan who is 14 is the oldest great-grandchild of Robert and Isobel and Grandson of Fiona and Malcolm. He has recently moved from role of Saturday helper in the shop to taking on the challenge of running our social media. Ewan is a keen guitarist and is currently studying hard for his National 5 exams. (He is also taking advantage of his role by using a very old photo). Facebook.com22nd Nov, 2017

    • Malcolm (husband of Fiona- see previous post) joined the team around 10 years ago following his retirement after 34 years working as a fireman. During this time he has looked after the cleaning of the hire jackets, ensuring each one spotless and ready for the next customer. He has also trained in and mastered the art of traditional plaid making. Each plaid being meticulously hand twirled and wax sealed, a lengthy process. Next time you visit the shop why not ask to see these gorgeous plaids? Facebook.com19th Nov, 2017

    • Meet the team!! First up is Fiona, daughter of Robert and Isobel, the R & I of R & I. I started sewing when I was a child, making pin cushions and garter flashes. In my teens started sewing parts of the kilts and learning to press them........ pressing lots and lots of kilts! I worked with Mum & Dad from home when my girls were young, sewing kilts and machining ladies and children's kilted skirts. Then I moved to Yorkshire for 3 years where I went from making kilts to making teddy bears. When I came back started back with mum and dad. By the mid 90's I needed to do something different for a while so joined the police.... just a wee bit different! I kept my hand in at sewing by helping out when R&I were busy. I then retired and realised I needed to work at least part-time so, quite happily, went back to the business and making kilts. Facebook.com16th Nov, 2017
